I've used Invision forums for years (never learned skins, to my shame).

Registration - All new users must be approved. If I ignore them, then they fade away in time.

Permissions - Newly registered users possess little more than Guest rights. (I gimped the default Members group.)
They are able to introduce themselves in only one guest forum.
After that, they get moved into another user group, Site Member, (simm) Crew Member, etc.
Those other groups have normal accesses.

The Ban Stick - If spammers begin to annoy, I am not averse to banning blocks of IP for a time.
Sometimes they're simply hijacked spambots. Other times, it's 'the gang' showing up from China or Russia.
It's rare that I would need to do that.

Layered countermeasures can keep forums rather comfy.

We've actually not had any spam here since my last post in this topic, which was over a year ago now.
