Star Trek: Ascension

Post by Seoulless » Sat Mar 08, 2014 8:20 am

So I thought I would post up some of my writing here. :D Need an outlet for my desire to write Star Trek fiction since my writer's group can appreciate it.

I hope you enjoy.

Prologue: Utopia Planitia Shipyards

Starships live and die… Kaison thought to himself as he stood silently gazing out of the observation window. Studying the incomplete shells of the ships under construction in orbit reminded him of the decimated ships he’d seen in his career. Exposed support beams, missing hull plating… everything he saw simply reinforced the sense that starships lived a life cycle much like any other sentient race in the galaxy. Here he was watching the birth of a dozen new vessels. Each one constructed with care and attention. They would grow and develop a history and personality of sorts much like any other child. Then inevitably they would either retire or they would die among the star, some honored and some forgotten.

He sighed softly as he turned away from the observation window, suddenly missing the familiar sight and smell of the Halifax. She was out there somewhere being decommissioned and mothballed, deemed out of date and no longer viable for refit. The Halifax had had a good run of it though. In a way it seemed fitting that the old girl would be decommissioned as her commanding officer retired from Starfleet. Captain Brinkmann had been the Halifax’s CO for over a decade and had almost given his life twice to save her. It was an appropriate dedication that Captain Brinkmann would be the last to command the aging Centaur-class ship. Briefly he wondered if they would show him the same courtesy when he retired. That thought lasted for only a moment before he berated himself silently for the audacity of it.

If Starfleet Intelligence had any say in the matter, when he finally retired he would be stripped of everything. It had only been by the graces of Rear Admiral Berland and others like her that he had retained his rank and commission after the Brigadier incident. Of course the implications of what he had discovered at the time had very nearly implicated the most powerful officers within Starfleet Intelligence. Insinuating that they had either turned a blind eye or actively assisted in the assassination plot against one of the Federation’s own Ambassadors in order to frame the Romulans and de-stabilize the new levels of cooperation that had sprung out of the Dominion War. Of course all of that changed despite what he had done, though in the end it had not been an assassin’s blade that had changed the disposition of the Romulans but a coup within their own government.

“Sir?” Kaison turned at the voice that interrupted his thoughts.

“Ensign.” Kaison acknowledged the yellow-clad ensign with a nod. Most of the crew of the Halifax had already departed the shipyards, bound for their next posts.
“You wanted to be contacted when your new orders arrived.”

“Thank you.” Kaison smiled as he took the offered PADD. The ensign nodded and left, leaving Kaison in silence again.

He turned back to the observation window watching for a few more minutes as construction pods and men drifted lazily around the nearest dock which was giving birth to a new Galaxy-class ship. Exterior plates were being added to the large saucer section while one of the two nacelles was pushed into place by a trio of construction pods. Looking down at the PADD he pressed his thumb against the scanner and scrolled through his newest set of orders.

“Reassigned to Deep Space 12.” He mumbled out loud. Not much more than that. Staring back out of the window he wondered if someone from Intelligence had managed to pull strings to get him assigned to some out of the way station. It wouldn’t matter either way, he’d make due. That was what he did after all. If he remembered correctly Deep Space 12 was an aging Spacedock-class station. One of the first built during the Federation’s last wave of expansion and so had been constructed near the outer limits of Federation territory.

Deep space 12… He did seem to remember hearing about something going on in that sector of space. Silently he pocketed the PADD and exited the observation room. He would need to pack his things and arrange for transport, though he did not look forward to how long the trip would take him.

Star Trek: Ascension - Opening shots

Post by Seoulless » Wed Apr 02, 2014 10:53 pm

Captain Vysk ch’Thar cursed in Andorian as the ship rocked violently. Behind him a console exploded in a shower of sparks and flames as the lights on the bridge flickered and died. “Send message to Starfleet!” He screamed over the alarm klaxons as he stood from his chair. The ship lurched again knocking the Andorian Captain off his feet. Gripping the damaged railing that ringed the raised rear section of the bridge he pulled himself towards the Ops station. “Ambassador Klyve has been killed. Diplomatic mission has failed.” The USS Regent, Sovereign-class starship of the United Federation of Planets shuddered as a dark azure bolt slammed into it again, blasting a deep jagged hole through the upper hull of the primary saucer.

“Message away, Captain!” Ensign Needa yelled as the bridge rocked again slamming her into the console.

“Evacuate the ship! Now!” Vysk turned, satisfied that the warning had been sent and lurched toward the CONN station at the front the bridge. Lieutenant Toku’s broken and burned body lay nearby, killed in the first salvo from the Overlord city ship. The console was damaged but still mostly functional, at least for what he needed.

“Pods are away, Captain!” Needa reported.

All around the ship handfuls of escape pods erupted from their ports, a woeful few considering its full crew compliment. Vysk ran his fingers across the pitted console’s surface, firing the Regent’s few remaining maneuvering thrusters. Two more bolts from the city ship smashed into the Regent’s broken surface as it angled to protect the escaping pods.

“Get to your escape pod, Ensign!”

Needa shook her head as she entered commands into her station. “Eighty crewmen made it to the pods, Captain! Numerous hull breaches and we’re venting plasma from the starboard nacelle!” Another azure bolt struck the saucer destroying the Regent’s last remaining phaser array.

“We just lost the Talleyrand!” Needa reported wiping sweat from her brow. “The Pioneer is attempting to break away!”

“Divert all power to the shields!” Vysk ordered thankful in part that Needa had elected to remain, that would make what he needed to do much easier. The phasers were offline and only one torpedo launcher remained functional. Hull integrity had been reduced to 30%. Vysk knew the Regent was lost, but he hoped he could give the Pioneer and the escape pods time to escape.
Sluggishly the Regent turned even as another azure blast blew away a section of the engineering hull. Internal atmosphere crystallized at it hit the vacuum of space, blowing out in a geyser of silver and debris. Vysk armed one final salvo of quantum torpedoes as he pushed the Regent’s last remaining impulse engine to maximum speed. At a touch the forward launcher belched out five brilliant points of light that streaked towards the massive mushroom shape of the Overlord city ship.

“Brace for impact.” Vysk ordered as he plotted a collision course.

Star Trek: Ascension - Decisive Decisions

Post by Seoulless » Wed Apr 02, 2014 10:56 pm

“Jeremiah.” The greeting came as RAdm. Jeremiah Stark stepped through the doorway and into the conference chamber.

“Let’s get on with it.” Stark huffed with a wave of his hand. “It’s still early.”

“Or late. Some of us haven’t bothered to go home yet.” RAdm. Ansha Targyen replied curtly.

“Quiet, all of you.” Vice Admiral Thaddeus Michaels ordered as he keyed up the holographic table. Flickering to life it projected the images of the now too familiar mushroom-like shape of the Overlord city ships. “Our diplomatic solution has failed.” He said bluntly. “Ambassador Klyve was killed and the Regent and Talleyrand were destroyed at Ceti Orphant. The Pioneer managed to escape and recovered eighty survivors who escaped the Regent’s destruction. They are currently in route to Deep Space 12 as we speak.”

“Any survivors from the Talleyrand?” RAdm. Vivian Berland asked softly.

“None. All hands were lost.” Michaels answered with a slow shake of his head.

“What are our options now?” Stark asked.

“It should be obvious.” Targyen answered coldly. “We need to reinforce the sector. Move as many ships as we can and prepare for the worst.”

“Threat evaluation?” Michaels cut in, taking control of the meeting again.

“We won’t have any definitive information until the Pioneer reaches Deep Space 12, but from the information that has been sent, I’d classify them on par with the Borg. They destroyed the Talleyrand in just a few seconds.” Commodore Nikoli Birchen reported.

“Are you sure you’re not over reacting? The Talleyrand is an older design. The Ambassador-classes are about ready to be retired.” Stark countered. “According to the preliminary report the Regent lasted longer.”

“True,” Birchen nodded, “however, the Overlord ship utilized two weapons systems that we are aware of. The Talleyrand was targeted by the city ship’s primary weapon system while the Regent was destroyed by the secondary weapon system. Initial analysis of the primary system places its power output on an enormous scale. Something equivalent to the power output of a Class 6 core over a full year.”

“Why didn’t it utilize that weapon against the Regent as well?” Admiral Stark asked as he leaned forward to inspect the holographic image closer.

“Our best guess is that it’s limited somehow. Either in the number of shots it can fire or perhaps there is some sort of recharge time requirement. We won’t have anything more until we analyze the data from the Pioneer.” Commodore Birchen answered calmly. “Their secondary weapon systems seems to be equivalent to ours in power output, though how they were able to overcome the Regent’s shields so quickly we don’t know.”

“Defensive capabilities?” Michaels prompted after a moment of silence.

“Well, as can be expected ships of that size are extremely well protected. I would expect each city ship has shielding roughly equivalent to our Spacedock-class stations, though as I said, we’ll learn more once we analyze the data from the Pioneer.”

“Hopefully, Captain Mershon had the sense enough to keep the Pioneer’s sensors running.” Stark grumbled. The Intrepid-class vessels still possessed some of the best sensors of any Starfleet ship, even compared to the newer Sovereign-class. If the Pioneer’s Captain had the foresight enough to run constant scans with the multi-directional sensor array then they would hopefully have enough sensor data to determine the exact strength of the Overlords’ weapons and shields.

“Captain Mershon isn’t a greenhorn.” Berland remarked. “He has been a Captain for five years now.”

“Regardless,” Michaels interjected before an argument erupted between the Chief of Starfleet’s Rapid Response Teams and the Chief of Personnel Management. “We need to get ships into that sector in case the Overlords decide to push into Federation territory.”

“I’ve already assigned three RRTs. They should be enroute as we speak.” Stark pursed his lips.

“How many ships total?” Targyen asked bluntly leaning forward and fixing the somewhat portly Stark with her piercing grey eyes.

“Twelve. Including two of those new Hunter-class ships.”

“Not enough.” Targyen huffed as she sat back. “We need more ships. Captains with combat experience.”

“We are still recovering from the Borg attacks five years ago.” Berland shook her head. “We have no lack of ships. But experience takes time. I’d estimate that a majority of our commanding officers do not have any actual wartime experience. Mostly small actions against pirates and rebels.”

“There has to be qualified candidates out there.” Targyen countered.

“There are,” Berland began carefully choosing her words, “officers who have command and wartime experience.”

“I detect a ‘but’ in there.” Targyen grumbled.

“For some there are rank issues. They have command experience but have not made Commander.” She shrugged. “For others they have black marks against them. Despite those marks they would still make fine commanding officers.”

“I suppose you have a list?” Michaels frowned. Most times he and Rear Admiral Berland were at odds with each other. He considered Berland to be an idealist, someone who could never understand that to keep the Federation strong one had to be willing to do anything to protect it.

“I do, but Fleet Admiral Seskoon is looking over them for possible assignment to the 6th Fleet.” Berland shrugged, ignoring the hard glare that Vice Admiral Michaels pinned her with. “He is looking to replace his losses as quickly as possible.”

“We should move an additional dozen ships into the sector then. Ansha, contact Fleet Admiral Seskoon and find out if a TacFleet task force can be diverted to Deep Space 12.” Michaels ordered after a brief moment. This was quickly escalating out of his control and he didn’t like it. He’d hoped that negotiating peace with the Overlords would become one of the crowning achievements of his career, possibly even a stepping stone to a promotion. Now however, it appeared that this might explode into a full blown war. Anything and everything needed to be done, to protect the Federation, and to protect him. He’d arranged for Ambassador Klyve to receive this assignment, but that old fool had failed. “Our priority should be analysis of the Pioneer’s data. We need to know what we are dealing with. Make sure that Commodore Birchen has all available resources at his disposal. We must act fast to protect the Federation.”

Flight patterns around Deep Space 12 had been cleared with all non-essential shuttle craft grounded or re-routed away from the port docking stations. In the dark vacuum of space silence punctuated the solemn arrival of a sole survivor. Two-hundred and forty-eight crew men out of eighteen hundred who had ventured into the territory of the Overlords. A single ship returned due in part to the sacrifice of one of its companions who had not. She had sustained only superficial damage in her escape, the brunt of the Overlord attack focused on the larger two ships that she had accompanied. The USS Pioneer, NCC-74757, had returned home.

Captain Jareq Mershon exhaled slowly as he watched the voluminous hangar of the Spacedock-class station loom in the front viewscreen. They had made it home. Though from what he’d seen of the Overlords’ technology he wondered if even this place was safe from them. They had destroyed the Talleyrand in two volleys, the first nearly severing the rear half of the Ambassador-class ship’s engineering hull. While the second had struck the Talleyrand’s warp core obliterating her in an instant. No survivors. Mershon pressed his forefinger and thumb against the sides of the bridge of his nose and rubbed the faint ridges of his half-Bajoran heritage.

=/\= Welcome home, Pioneer. =/\= Came the response from station control as the doors of the hangar closed behind the small Intrepid-class ship.

Mershon glanced around the bridge at his officers. Relief and disbelief reflected on their faces. Relief at returning to safe harbor, disbelief that so few of them had returned. Since he’d become Captain of the Pioneer he’d never believed that he would be returning like this, weighed down by the memories of over fifteen-hundred dead left behind. He had lost crew members before, but he’d always been able to recover their bodies to return to their families or at the very least to honor the dead with a proper burial. But not for the fifteen-hundred Starfleet officers and crewmen killed by the Overlords. Not just killed. Murdered. Brutally. When he was the XO of the USS Alamut, they had thought the Borg were the greatest threat they could have faced. Now he believed that the Overlords were. He would have gladly stayed and given his life with others, but what he carried was far more important in the greater scheme of things. Information.

“Begin transmitting our data to the station.” Mershon ordered his tone heavy with exhaustion. “Secure a copy of the data into a portable computer core and have it delivered to Commodore Cecere.”

“Aye, sir.” Commander Toliver Occuda responded.

“Atia, as soon as we are cleared begin scheduling time for the crew to get a short shoreleave. No telling how long we’ll be in dock.”

“Aye, sir.” The short Orion woman nodded.

Kaison brushed the front of his uniform flat as he stepped out of the turbolift. Striding confidently down the hallway he paused at the door to the station commander's office. Taking a breath he glanced through the opposite doors leading to the station's primary operations center, gathering his thoughts and composing himself. He steeled himself to what he might find in the commander's office. Outwardly he would reflect the cool, calm professionalism that spoke to the fact that he was worthy of command. That everything Starfleet Intelligence might have 'leaked' was a carefully constructed lie.

Mentally prepared he turned and stepped into the Commodore’s outer office. He smiled faintly at the Vulcan woman seated at the desk. “Commander Kaison Draco.” Kaison introduced himself pleasantly.

“Of course.” T’San responded flatly. “You are expected.” She stood gracefully and preceded Kaison to the inner set of doors, keying them open and motioning him to enter.

Kaison nodded as he stepped passed the Vulcan aide and into the Commodore’s office proper. Snapping crisply to attention as the doors whispered shut behind him. “Commander Draco reporting as ordered.”

“At ease, Commander. Take a seat.” Commodore Linda Cecere said with a slight tinge of approval lacing the tone of her voice. She was an abrupt woman perhaps slightly younger than Kaison himself was, with a squarish jaw that seemed to permanently set her mouth into a scowl. “I hope your trip was… pleasant.” Commodore Cecere detested small talk, regarding it as a waste of time. It was something that she had in common with her Vulcan aide.

“Pleasant enough.” Kaison replied as he sat.

“Well, first things first.” She continued flatly. “Rear Admiral Berland had wanted to be here to do this, but her duties have detained her. So it falls to me as the ranking officer.” Commodore Cecere opened the small drawer on her desk and removed a small black box. “You are hereby promoted to the rank of Captain. With all of the responsibilities and privileges it entails.” Opening the box she revealed the gold pips within and slid it across the desk.

“Thank you, Commodore.” Kaison responded somewhat dumbfounded.

“Frankly I don’t agree with the Admiral’s decision, but I suppose it’s not my call to make.” She said bluntly enough that Kaison wondered what she had heard. “I’ll be honest with you, Captain. I don’t trust you. Classified holes in your record and the fact that you were at one point an undercover agent for Starfleet Intelligence.”

Kaison bristled slightly at her tone but remained quiet.

“Your previous commanding officer gave you high marks as his Executive Officer, strongly suggesting that you were ready for command.” Commodore Cecere glared at him. “Do you think you’re ready?”

“Is anyone really ready, Commodore?” Kaison responded in a calm manner. “A man I admire greatly once told me that the sign of a great captain was the ability to make the decision when the sacrifice of a few would save the lives of the many, and then living with those decisions. If that’s the case, then I’ve already made similar decisions in my career.”

Commodore Cecere paused, her dark eyes never leaving him. However, for a moment that glare that she had been drilling him with softened slightly. “A famous Starfleet officer and ambassador said something similar once.” She leaned forward tapping into her console briefly before picking up a PADD from the side of her desk. “I cannot fault your combat experience. The Dominion War, the Klingon-Federation War, and the Borg Incursions. Combat experience is certainly something we need right now.” She paused before handing the PADD to Kaison. “Perhaps that’s why you’ve been promoted. We lost a good number of experienced Captains in those conflicts and Starfleet is now full of inexperienced ones.”

Kaison nodded and glanced at the PADD.

“You’ve been given the USS Armstrong, registry NCC-57537, as your first command.” Commodore Cecere continued when he didn’t reply. “I don’t have a mission for you yet as we are still waiting for a reassessment of resources in this area, but I expect something to come in shortly from headquarters. In the meantime, get settled and prepare your crew for departure. Once we have your orders I’ll provide a more in depth briefing on what’s been happening out here.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Kaison nodded.

“Any questions?”

“No, ma’am. I’ll make sure that we’re ready to go.”

“Very well, I won’t keep you any longer. Dismissed.”

Kaison breathed a subtle sigh of relief as he exited the Commodore’s office and made his way back to his temporary quarters. He had a lot to do to transfer to his new command. Stepping into the sparsely decorated quarters on Deep Space 12, Kaison replicated a karvino juice and sat at the small desk. Keying in his authorization code he accessed the station’s computer network.

Taking a sip of his juice he accessed the Armstrong’s data. The Challenger-class cruisers had been in service since 2350. Ostensibly they were classified as scout cruisers, designed for long-range reconnaissance and scouting missions though they were larger than most scout classes of the time. The Armstrong had made a name for itself during the Cardassian conflict of the 2350’s as well as during the Federation-Klingon War of 2372 and later in the Dominion War. Since their production run began most surviving Challengers had seen numerous refits and the Armstrong was no exception. It was nearly destroyed in 2373 when it was ambushed by a Klingon battle group. Afterwards it had gone through an extensive refit and repair process. It was one of the few Challengers equipped with an additional photon torpedo tube, though it had sacrificed two of its laboratory facilities to make room. Then in 2380 it saw another major refit which saw its computer network and fusion reactors upgraded, as well as its phasers. Kaison scrolled through the refit notes. It also appeared that the bridge module had been replaced with a Prometheus type bridge after it had been damaged on a previous mission. The mission where she lost her previous commanding officer. After it had returned to port her Executive Officer was deemed unfit for duty and transferred coreward to Starfleet Command.

“Incoming communication from Starfleet Command.” The computer spoke.

“On screen.” Kaison said as he watched the screen switch. A familiar face appeared smiling broadly.

“Congratulations, Captain.”

“Thank you, Admiral.” Kaison nodding. Rear Admiral Vivian Berland had been one of his staunchest supporters during his court-martial. Unlike many she did not start her career as an Ensign like most of the top brass. She signed on as a crewman and worked her way up the ranks until she earned her officer’s commission.

“I would have preferred to give you the news myself, but unfortunately things here prevented me from leaving.” Berland said mysteriously. “Have you received your new command?”

Kaison nodded. “The Armstrong.”

“Challenger-class. I’ve always been partial to the Springfields myself. Reliable ships though.” She almost sighed wistfully as she remembered her years serving aboard the USS Alabaster. “Have you been told anything about what is going on out there?”

“No, ma’am.” Kaison shook his head as he leaned forward. “I was told by Commodore Cecere to get settled aboard the Armstrong and make sure she was ready to depart.”

Berland nodded with a somewhat sad but knowing smile. “You should know that Commodore Cecere is one of Admiral Michaels’. She is a good officer but don’t trust everything she says.”

“I got the feeling she already knew a little bit about my past.” Kaison shook his head ruefully, wondering if he would ever be able to overcome the prejudice of his actions. Everything he had done had been to protect the Federation.

“That doesn’t surprise me.” Berland leaned forward fixing Kaison with a serious gaze. “Be careful out there, Kaison. We are on the brink of war with the Overlords. They’ve killed one of our Ambassadors and destroyed two ships. Your transfer to Deep Space 12 is part of a move to reinforce the ships in the area. I can’t tell you much more right now, but Michaels has managed to maintain operational command of this situation.”

Kaison frowned. Vice Admiral Michaels had been one of those high level Starfleet officers who had nearly been implicated in the plot to assassinate a Federation Ambassador. But a compromise had been reach between the parties within Starfleet that were vying for control. A compromise that buried the truth but acquitted him of all charges. Afterwards he and Starfleet Intelligence had gone separate ways. Because of Kaison’s direct involvement in the incident Michaels had done his best to discredit and stymie Kaison’s career.

“Don’t worry. You’ll have the chance to gain some allies out there. Most of the 6th Fleet Captains will not be involved with Michaels. Which should mean they will be at least neutral towards you.” Berland smiled reassuringly. “I would suggest that you play nice and make friends out there.”

“Of course, Admiral.” Kaison nodded appreciatively. “Thank you for the Intel.”

“I’ve also taken the liberty of assigning you an aide. There are very few Halanan in Starfleet but there is an Ensign who is serving aboard a science vessel only about eight hours from Deep Space 12. I’ve had him reassigned to you.”

“Ma’am?” Kaison questioned.

“I’ve been reading up on Halanan and thought it might be helpful if your aide was familiar with your abilities. The logical choice was to make your aide a Halanan as well.” Berland smiled. “Would you have preferred a female aide?” She joked.

“No, ma’am. Thank you for your consideration.”

“Godspeed, Captain.” With a brief nod Rear Admiral Berland cut the transmission.

Kaison returned to reviewing the Armstrong’s repair records and was satisfied with the ship’s operational status. He accessed the crew manifest next since the Armstrong had taken casualties during its last mission. It was currently staffed to approximately 80%, though the current list of transfer orders showed another 5% of the crew was currently transferring aboard. Transfers appeared to be running smoothly and Kaison hoped they would be completed by the time he received their first mission orders. All department heads were aboard and only himself and the XO were absent. Curious he accessed the transfer orders and displayed his new XO’s file.

Jennice Sheely. He thought to himself. She had served aboard the USS Victory an aging Constellation-class ship. Another orphan of a decommissioned vessel. He bemused. According to the station’s records she should be arriving that evening aboard the Argosy, a Danube-class runabout. He leaned back and took a long drink of his karvino juice before leaning forward and entering a request into the station’s Operations requests to have his belongings transferred to the Armstrong when they arrived.

Logging out of the console he stood and began gathering his things. Fortunately he had not bothered to unpack anything except one of his uniforms. Standing he tapped his combadge.

=/\= Captain Draco to the USS Armstrong. =/\=

=/\= Armstrong here, sir. =/\= Came the response.

=/\= Please inform the senior staff to be prepared for a staff meeting and dinner tonight at… =/\= He paused and checked the log for Commander Sheely’s arrival. =/\= Eight o’clock. Also have a couple of crewmen check to ensure my quarters are prepared. =/\=

=/\= Aye, sir. =/\=

He gathered his things and exited his temporary quarters without looking back.

Lt. Nessa Deaton clicked the comm off and stood up from her desk. The ops officer on duty had just informed her of the recent communiqué from their new Captain and she was going to insure that everything was in order. Though he hadn’t said when he was coming aboard, she was positive that it would be soon, very soon.

“Geoffrey.” She called out as she straightened her tunic.

“Ma’am?” Her sandy-brown haired assistant appeared promptly.

“Get the senior staff meeting room prepared.” She ordered politely. “Also notify the lounge that we’ll need food service for the staff meeting.”

“Aye, ma’am.” Geoffrey turned and disappeared to carry out her orders.

With a sigh she opened a comm. channel to other department heads. “Deaton to Department Heads. Dinner meeting at 20:00 hours with the new Captain.” She held the channel open until she had gotten confirmation from all of the Department heads, and then strode out of her office to the airlock access.

** * * * **

Lt. Simon Ehrlich closed the channel after sending his confirmation. Meeting a new commanding officer was always interesting. He finished the rest of his coffee before logging into the network and pulling up his new CO’s file. As ship’s councilor he had greater access then most of the rest of the senior staff, though he rarely utilized it. Like most of the department heads, Nessa had notified them as soon as the transfer orders for the new captain had come through.

Standing as the system accessed the Captain’s service record, he walked to the replicator and replicated a fresh cup of coffee. Stretching he returned to his desk. He blinked as he looked at the image of their new Captain. He had heard of the Halanan but never actually met one. They were recent members of the United Federation of Planets, having only officially joined within the last decade.

Reading through the service record Simon whistled to himself. “A wartime veteran. The Federation-Klingon war, the Dominion War, and the Borg incursions.” He read out loud. That was impressive but curiously there was a hole in the man’s service records. A hole of almost a full year, more interestingly though it was a classified hole. Leaning back he stared up at the plain gray ceiling wondering what that hole could represent. Briefly he wondered if he should call in a favor or two and try to get more information.

** * * * **

Thalek sh’Raaz grunted his acknowledgement before turning back to his reports. Another new commanding officer was nothing that he needed to worry about. At least not right now. He had dozens of new security officers to get sorted and assigned to their shifts. According to his friends on Deep Space 12 there was a very good chance that they would be leaving station within the next day or so. Rumors were that things had not gone well with the task group and that they had all been ordered back to Deep Space 12 after a failed encounter with… what were they called… the Overlords. Absently he keyed a requisition in for an additional shipment of compression phaser rifles. His antennae twitched as he studiously worked his way through the incoming transfers and requisitions.

** * * * **

Lt. Brant Lassen reached over and gently stroked his companion’s hair listening as she acknowledged the request from the Ops Chief, before leaning back with a long stretch and a groan. “I guess the vacation’s over with.” He joked.

“Looks like it.” Lt. Leela Priela stood as she reached for her clothes that were scattered about the CFCO’s bedroom.

“Leaving already?” Brant asked as he watched as her uniform slowly covered the soft pale curves of her body.

“I’ve got to make sure things are in order in Engineering before the new captain arrives.” She explained matter of factly. “I’ll see you later though.”

“I hope so. I might need someone to vent my thoughts about the new captain with.”

Leela laughed as she pulled on her shoes. “I’ll bring the Romulan ale then.”
