Description
One of the features of the Sentry-class runabout. It was designed in 2377 as an alternative design to the already successful Danube class. Although the runabout performed well in both space and atmospheric environments, Starfleet officials felt that it was a waste of resources to develop a new runabout without good reason. Their opinion changed, however, when the runabout found its niche as a test bed for new sensor technologies.

When the Sentinel-class design specs called for a Runabout-sized auxiliary craft, Starfleet Research and Development offered up the Sentry-class design on the condition that they could modify the Sentinel prototypes long range sensor array to accommodate the powerful sensor data streams sent by the Sentry via subspace.

Essentially, the Sentry-class can be sent out beyond the effective range of the Sentinel's long range sensors and boost its capabilities further. Of course the new sensor range is only limited to the direction of the Sentry-class, but the Sentry's potential as a scout, makes her a perfect design for the Sentinel's arsenal.

Why so many weapons? I know they say "hand phasers", but these aren't phasers you can pull out and take off the ship, these are ship mounted phaser equivalents to the hand phasers... having 16 mounted weapons on a runabout?

I asked you about this when I first started and you said HAND PHASERS, EVA suits and the like were equipment carried aboard the shuttles for away team purposes, you never said anything about them being physically mounted to the shuttles themselves.

I said that for EVA suits, but not for the phasers... When I was R&D, I had to work with what was there... take the Grommet for example, to list the phasers on the ship- it was never meant for combat, but what are listed are external weapons.

Rather than continue on, maybe we should add the Type-I to III into the regular armaments and once all the ships are converted to this, remove the hand phasers from the database completely...

Actually, having been part of the discussions from the original acting R&D director when the hand phasers were added, I can confirm that they are meant to represent the auxiliary craft's internal armoury for away team purposes.

I was under the opposite impression when I did my designs... The Grommet's weapons are off, as well as most of the fighters and specialized shuttle/runabouts, etc that I've worked on.

Well, now that we've established that they are in fact away team gear, I will reassess the hand phaser numbers for each craft in the near future.

You might want to upload those to:

After ST Australia went bye-bye, I worry about losing valuable picture sources for our COs

The images I've upped are all on my server anyways, but yeah, I'll be upping them to R&D too.
