Description

The Type 5 Shuttle was designed in the mid 2280's. Given the advancements in Transporter technology, Starfleet's focus on shuttle designs had shifted somewhat during this period. As such, shuttles were designed to be adaptable in order to fulfill their mission parameters.

The original Type 5 Shuttle was designed with very little thought to comfort. Capable of carrying up to 12 passengers in addition to the two crew, it's main function was to carry large numbers of people in addition to limited amounts of cargo or equipment. The Type 5 was not warp capable, however the hull's structure and design was built to survive extreme stresses and research into the possibility of incorporating a warp drive commenced.

As time went on, the Type 5's designers collected reports from pilots of the shuttle type. Taking these reports into account, they made improvements to the design, starting with adding port and starboard windows to the nose section, which increased pilots visibility.
The reports also cited the need for several variants that could fulfil a wider variety of roles more effectively and as a result, the following subtypes were created:

The Type 5H Shuttle is primarily used for hauling cargo. The aft compartment is isolated from the command deck to ensure the crews safety when transporting dangerous goods. It has a crew of 2 and is only capable of impulse speeds.

The Type 5E Shuttle is primary used for transporting important passengers comfortably. While very little thought was put into the comfort of the crew and passengers of the original design. The aesthetically pleasing interior and the comfortable seating allow for a smaller number of passengers (6 in total) in addition to the standard 2 crew. The Type 5E Shuttle is not warp capable.

The Type 5W Shuttle is the only warp capable variant of this shuttle Type. Capable of carrying 2 passengers in addition to the 2 crew, the majority of the aft compartment is sealed off to accommodate the Warp Drive. The Shuttle's Warp Drive is capable of reaching a velocity of warp 2 in emergencies, but can only sustain the speed for 3 hours. However, the design is capable of sustaining warp 1 for several days and warp 1.5 for up to 12 hours.
