OFFICES OF THE GALACTIC ANTHROPOLOGY COMMISSION
Species Format Submission Form 35489.2321A

Please fill out this form in as much detail as possible.

SPECIES NAME: Gharayans

CULTURAL DESIGNATION: The Ghar

HOME SYSTEM: Gharrana

HOME REGION: SE of Metron Space

PLANETARY INFORMATION: A planet of many faces, Gharrana II where the Gharayans made their home many millennia ago is blessed with pleasant, warm weather all year round, perfect for a race descended from the Gorn.

DISCOVERY DATE & SHIP: 2309 - USS Frost

AFFILIATION: Allies.

CAPITAL: Ghar

POLITICAL SYSTEM: Elective Presidency. Federation Member.

POPULATION: ~1 million

APPEARANCE: The Gharayans look almost identical to the Gorn but with pronounced alterations in the neck, where years of genetic research has allowed them to speed up their evolution to incorporate 'standard' spoken language.

LANGUAGE: Gharayans have adapted to speak a form of Federation Standard that is just decipherable enough for the Universal Translator to manipulate into fluent speech. Although they have been apart from the Hegemony for many hundreds of years and have evolved a great deal, their physiology still makes it very difficult for them to speak in what most Federation races would understand as a 'language'.

CHARACTER: Peaceful.

LOCATION: SE of Metron space. Out of the reach of the Hegemony.

HISTORY: Not much is known about the early years of the Gharayans as, when they abandoned the Hegemony, the practice of keeping records was all-but a new invention. As such, many records were kept in local dialects and shorthands which have become indecipherable to Gharayan scholars as time has gone on. It is thought that they separated themselves from the Gorn Hegemony in the early years of the 21st Century and set off to make a home in the Galaxy, free from the warlike intentions of the government.

Many of them were simple folk with no urge to fight or die in the pursuit of a government which they felt didn't stand for them. Many doctors and scholars followed their flight and joined them.

Recent history suggests that the Gharayans (as they christened themselves) have spent the subsequent time working on the speech and language centres of their physiology to allow them to trade with the Federation and other systems in the region. When they were first discovered by the USS Frost in 2309, only a select group of them had received the treatment which allowed them to speak Federation standard. By 2380, around 90% of the population had received the elective therapy.

In 2346 the Gharayans applied for membership in the Federation, citing a shared bond over peace and prosperity. Their application was completed and formalised in 2350.

TECHNOLOGY: In terms of vessels, the Gharayans are well served by Starfleet and have a fleet of small merchant craft that they use to fulfil their trade routes throughout the area. These vessels have a maximum cruising capacity of around warp 6.

Their medical technology (especially in the area of gene therapy) is advanced, with strict guidelines surrounding its use. The Gharayan Science Forum meets on a six-monthly basis to discuss the use of the gene therapy as part of disease treatment/prevention and elective therapies designed to assist Gharayan incorporation into the Federation. The Federation Medical Council has approved the Gharayan treatments as being non-invasive and controlled to within acceptable parameters.

RELIGION: None.

CONTACT: Have they been contacted? If so, what was first contact like? If not, what have orbital surveys revealed about them?

GOVERNMENT: Republic. As a member of the Federation, the Gharayan president is elected to be their representative to the Federation.

MILITARY: The Gharayans have no formal military, having been accepted into the Federation in 2350.
