Night Shifts

Post by Williams » Wed Apr 22, 2015 3:42 pm

Hey everyone

Part of my RL job means that every 5 weeks or so, I work a night shift. Since that means a messed up sleeping pattern for a while (usually extending to a couple of days either side as I adjust my sleeping pattern), I figured that it would be a good idea to just note here what weeks I'll be working nights. My responses will likely be slower than usual around the week of nights, but I'll still make sure to get back to you as soon as I can. If you're waiting a day or so for me to get back to you, check here and see if I'm on nights or not.

I'll keep the list below as updated as I can. The shifts are still being worked out, so so far all I'm certain of is this week of nights:

- Mon 6th Jun - Fri 10th Jun
- Mon 11th Jul - Sun 17th Jul
- Sat 20th Aug - Wed 24th Aug

As an additional to the above, I just wanted to mention that on Saturday and Sunday nights when I'm working, I'll be doing 12 hour shifts instead of my usual 10 - so I may have an even shorter window in which to respond to things until Monday afternoon when I'll be off work for week.

Forgot to update this - I got moved around quite a few different shifts so my night shift pattern changed quite a bit. Looks like it has settled down now and I'm actually doing nights again, so I've updated the first post with the current set I've been given.

I didn't know July had 37 days in it. In fact I didn't know any month had 37 days in it.

Shift rotation is hard on employee health. It can be harmful.
Companies sometimes do that as a tactic to keep employees from taking second jobs.
I very much liked a consistent night shift, 3 x 12s on weekend nights for years.

I hope that you are able to hold up well in RL with the rotations.

To be fair it's working out fairly well so far. One week in every 5 we do a set of nights (10 hours weekdays, then 12 hours for the weekend), but the week before we're only in for 2 days, and we're off the entire week after. It's far better than having shorter time spans between coming off nights and going back on to days.

One oddity of it is that my last Sunday night before I start the night shift for the week, I have to try and stay up as late as I can so that I can stay up all of monday night for the shift. So days like today I tend to get up around 9/10am, then don't go to bed again until at least 4am. It works alright though as long as I have stuff to do to keep me occupied - and sim stuff is a great thing to fill that time with :)
