USS Dreadnought's Current Mission

Post by Solaris » Sun Jan 21, 2018 2:55 pm

During its last mission the U.S.S. Dreadnought encountered a derelict freighter, devoid of life, vented into space with access hatches and airlocks open drifting a ways from known shipping routs. Scans were difficult to make out but for reasons that were unknown, an away team was sent to find out what happened.

When they boarded the ship they were greeted with clear signs of trouble, burn marks on bulkheads, frozen blood and tissue from savage wounds but yet no bodies. With the ship powerless half of the team went to Engineering the other to the Bridge where they would attempt to download the last mission files and information for review on the Dreadnought. When the team reached Engineering they found a strange growth on the Warp core almost encompassing it and the injector conduits. Scans could not tell what it was or where it came from but things turned for the worse when the power was restored. While those on the Bridge were unaware of the dangers they had just awoken they began to download the files. It was by chance they caught a log from a maintenance officer, the last entry where she seemed panicked, afraid, fearful and repeats that she turned off the power to stop it, that it fed off the energy and radiation of the core. By this time it was already too late.

As what ever it was awoke it began to pulse with life, reach out to what it needed, material. It was at this point where it was clear where the bodies of the crew had gone, they were the mass on the core. After killing one of the engineering team it became a firefight and close calls to escape and the team had to corner into some quarters and blow out the viewport to escape as all air locks and hatches had sealed.

William Hood deemed that what ever it was posed too much of a danger to remain and destroyed the freighter. Thinking that would be the end of it Hood was far from right. The explosion of the frieghter scattered remains of the mass and part of it landed on the nacelle of the giant vessel where it grew, spread to within the nacelle without hampering operations to go unnoticed. This clear sign of intelligence manifested itself when it started to spread through the nacelle strut towards engineering. Chief Engineer Bradshaw shut off the core and sealed off the conduits to the nacelle by bringing down interlocking emergency doors, while this effectively severed the growths fuel source the residual radiation was enough to keep it growing for a while. While the bulk of the creature was kept behind the doors small tendrils worked through and around what ever it could to feed and grow. Attacking crew and system alike a plan had to be formulated and quickly before it spread, the Chief Engineer along with Lt. Zan Luthar and Hood devised a plan that would involve using the fighters on board to literally severe the nacelle from the ship thus containing the organism and let it drift into the local sun.

The plan needed fine tuning and that required time. Meanwhile an EVA team was setting up sensor points over the nacelle strut to gather live readings, the organism attacks them, kills one forcing the time table to be accelerated. The plan was enacted but once it was done the mood was diminished as while the danger was over, for some they had crossed a line they never thought they had to consider.

The Dreadnought was towed to the Remmler Array where the Bayron sweep was used to ensure every trace of the organism was gone but there would be some difficult questions ahead, explanations to be made and someone to be accountable.
